In Home Newborn Sessions

Everything you need to know

I've been here 3 times. Evie, Anna & Willem are their names and my heart still breaks when I look at their photos from the early days. I can't explain the lump I get in my chest when I think back to that first year... It was a beautiful, crazy, chaotic whirlwind that we somehow survived yet didn't. The old us, gone. The new us emerging from those beautiful trenches, triumphant at having kept ourselves and our tiny humans alive for a whole year in the complex new world of parenting.

So, I get it. I really do. Maybe you have done it before too or maybe you are about to enter your first season of this beautiful chaos. Wherever you're at, I hope that the hard times are met with the richest joy. And if you feel like we'd be a good match then I'd see it as a privilege to capture a snippet of this life changing season for you...

Not just a photographer, a mother that knows the messy motherhood journey well.

A little about me

Newborn Sessions

01

When should I have a newborn session?

These sessions *ideally* take place within the first two weeks of your baby's life. After two weeks it's common for them to develop baby acne on their face so it's best to schedule your session before this [if you can manage it]. This timeframe is also ideal because usually your bub is still in a magical 'newborn coma' and they are easy to settle + fold into cute (heart stopping) snuggle positions.

02

Where in the house does the session take place?

We usually almost always use your bedroom, mainly on your bed (so make sure you choose a neutral bedspread so your outfits don't clash). Don't worry about having your whole house clean either. Just focus on tidying the master bedroom, the kids bedrooms and the main living area. Know that I do tend to shoot into corners a lot (which hides mess) and I hardly ever photograph in kitchens or bathrooms. And if the weather is Ok we sometimes (not always) venture into the back or front yard. I also have a habit of rearranging your house to find the best light... don't worry, I'll put it back!

03

Getting ready

I want you to feel relaxed so please don't worry if your windows are dirty or the kitchen is a mess - that's OK! I know you've just had a baby and it's hard to even get dressed! I tend to shoot into corners a lot which means we can hide mess easily [the tricks of the trade]! Just make sure you have a cuppa or coffee beforehand. Try your best to feed bubba before the session starts but if it doesn't work out that way then that's totally Ok! I always leave extra time for newborn sessions for this reason.

“Her images are raw, real and natural. I literally shed a tear looking through her photos! I look forward to having Amy capture our future family milestones as her pictures really do tell a thousand words!"

“Amy is truly talented and brings real emotion into every shot"

Jenna Elizabeth

Amy was so sweet and intuitive, it made the session such a wonderful experience and a real bonding time for our little family. The photos are magical and continue to bring us such joy- I get goosebumps every time I look at them!

"We are incredibly thankful to Amy for so beautifully capturing this precious time in our lives."

Angi Hill

I loved my pregnancy belly shoot. Amy made me feel beautiful, feminine and super comfortable. When our son Weston was born, Amy was there quietly capturing our birth story. When Weston was 6 weeks old, she was there again documenting life as a family of three. Lucky, we're with Amy!

"There is no one quite like Amy! "

Kind Words

You know that deep, overwhelming, gut-wrenching love you feel for your kids—the kind that sits in your bones and shapes your world? That’s what moves me. And believe it or not, one of my superpowers is capturing that love. Giving you a glimpse of just how deeply you love your kids (and how much they adore you) is what I do. It still amazes me that I get to freeze those feelings in time—it’s like creating magic.

A lot of photographers focus on making sure you fit into a certain aesthetic—coordinated outfits, perfectly curated poses, just right for their Instagram grid. That’s not my thing. Sure, I’ll give you styling and posing tips if you want them, but what I truly care about is capturing you. The real, raw, beautiful you. I want to create images that make your heart ache, sing, and smile all at once.

When we work together, you won’t feel like you’re playing a role or dressing up for a performance. You’ll walk away knowing the experience was authentic to you—your family, your love, your story.

And listen, I know family life is messy—mine is too! But that’s part of the magic. That chaos, that laughter, that fierce, unfiltered love—that’s what I want to document. One cup of tea at a time.

faq

Where are you based & do you travel?

I'm based in Melbourne, Australia. I do travel rurally (and occasionally interstate) & I also have a lovely little light filled studio in Mont Albert North in Melbourne.

I travel up to 40 KM from Melbourne CBD. If you are further than this then there will be a small travel fee. If you don't want to pay a travel fee then you are welcome to come to my studio or we can arrange to meet at an outdoor location somewhere.

How does scheduling a newborn session work?

It's quite simple. If you are pregnant then I suggest you book in with me now (I just ask for a $300 deposit) to make sure you don't miss out as I only schedule a certain number of shoots per month. I will then put you in my calendar for that month. Once baby arrives, contact me ASAP and we will schedule a time within the ideal two week window. I usually start newborn sessions at 10am.

Do you have to have your shoot within 2 weeks? Can I wait until baby is older?

No, you don't have to have your shoot in the first 2 weeks but if you are wanting those tiny, squishy newborn images then I do suggest this timeframe. We also aim for this because babies can develop acne on their face after two weeks of age. I know that having a baby is a beautiful shock to the system so I'm fine to wait until you are ready, I just don't want you to miss out on those fresh newborn images if that is what you are wanting.

What should my baby wear for the shoot?

My personal fave is a little knitted romper or legless overalls (or knitted nappy cover) because it still gives baby the security of clothing while us still being able to see + photograph their beautiful newborn skin BUT it's really up to you. I do have a little bag with these kind of items that I bring with me if you're stuck but please don't feel any pressure for your bubba to wear what I bring, I want the shoot to be true to you so if you have something more meaningful that you'd like your baby to wear then go with that. And if you want to go the extra step then a textured blanket or interesting wrap can be lovely too (just try and stay away from pink or blue). If you would like some outfit inspiration then please click here!

Do I need to provide anything else?

As I said above, one thing that really makes for nice photos is a lovely textured/knitted/linen/quilted blanket or wrap to loosely wrap baby in. I can have a look at what you have when I arrive. Neutral tones look lovely but so do pops of colour. The more texture the better.

Do you photograph baby awake or asleep?

A little bit of both but I prefer sleeping babies because fresh new babies can be a bit crossed-eyed when awake, adorable but kinda weird looking for photos! There are a few ways we can help get baby to sleep like feeding them, turning the heating up in your house, white noise or music can help this too. We can also wrap them tight and then gently unwrap them as they fall into a deeper sleep. Leave it with me, I've got this!

What can I do in the morning to help prepare for the session?

Have a cuppa (or coffee)! If you could aim to try and feed bubba just before I arrive then that is most ideal. I do know however, that babies don't really fit into our schedule when they are so little so if you can't time this out then don't stress.

Can I feed my baby during the session?

Absolutely YES, don't even ask! It's expected that baby might need a full feed or quick top up here and there to get them settled. Feeding is our magic sleep wand that will absolutely be needed at some point during the session, I'm sure!

What happens if we are sick?

That's totally OK, we can reschedule although, it might not always be possible to find a time in that ideal 2 week old window. And just know that if I am sick myself (even slightly) then we will reschedule too. I'd hate to transfer any germs to a precious new baby so there is grace both ways when it comes to sickness.

Can I eat and drink during my session?

Absolutely yes, I encourage this especially if you are breastfeeding! My newborn sessions usually go for at least 2 hours so you will probably get hungry. My sessions are super chilled and I want you to feel comfortable, relaxed and NOT hungry (also, hungry partners are no fun either - make sure they are fed!).

What if the siblings are not cooperating?

This will totally happen! Kids, babies (even partners! hehe) usually feel the pressure of photoshoot day and the amount of times I hear "but he is usually so happy!" Don't worry this happens ALL the time. Sometimes kids just need to stop, have a drink or snack and then they are good to go again. I am sensitive to your family and the little people break downs and if you guys need to stop then we do. The worst thing you can do in this situation is get angry with your kids. It never works and it's hard to bring them back emotionally. Take the lead from me, I always have a few tricks up my sleeve!

Do you re-touch our images?

No, not really. I'm all about embracing and loving the real you! I definitely edit your images to suit my 'Amy Oliver Style' but I'm not a photographer who smooths skin or makes you look skinnier. If you are after this kind of thing then I might not be the right photographer for you.

Do you photograph same-sex families?

Of course! I'm sorry this has to even be a FAQ [but I have been asked]! Family is family and now let's just pretend this isn't a question, OK?!

You don't need to pretend infront of my camera. You are enough, just as you are.
