Outdoor Family Photography Session

Everything you need to know

I’ve been there—three times. Evie, Anna, and Willem. My babies. And even now, my heart aches a little when I look back at their early photos. I can’t quite explain the lump in my throat when I think about that first year… a beautiful, wild, chaotic whirlwind. We made it through—somehow—but not without change. The old us was gone. In its place, a new version of ourselves, shaped by love, exhaustion, and the sheer miracle of keeping tiny humans alive for an entire year in this crazy world of parenting.

So trust me, I get it. The days feel long, but the years? They slip by in a blink. You want to hold onto these moments before your kids wake up one morning and—just like that—they’ve grown again! Whatever stage your family is in, whatever shape or form it takes, I’m here for it. I promise I can create magic out of the chaos and turn the love you have for your kids into something tangible, something timeless. And if I can’t? I’ll refund you.

Not just a photographer, a mother that knows the messy motherhood journey well.

A little about me

 Outdoor sessions

01

When should I have an outdoor session?

These sessions run from September through to the end of April. If you're really keen on a location shoot outside of this window, you might be able to twist my arm—but just a heads-up, bad weather often means lots of rescheduling.

I usually start sessions about 1.5 hours before sunset for that dreamy golden light, but if you're feeling extra brave (and well-caffeinated), sunrise is a beautiful option too!

02

Where does it take place?

I have a few gorgeous locations up my sleeve, but I’d love to hear your ideas too! I tend to steer clear of bright green, manicured parks (especially the ones with playgrounds) and lean towards spots with a softer, more natural feel—think wispy long grass, overgrown tracks, open fields, cliffs, wild hills, or beautiful beaches. Once you're booked in, I’ll send you some location options to choose from!

03

Getting ready

The secret to a smooth outdoor shoot? Good snacks! Bring along some favourites that won’t stain clothes—think jelly lollies, popcorn, biscuits, or apple slices—plus a little drink to keep them happy. We almost always take a snack break during the session, especially if the kids need a little reset.

If figuring out what to wear feels a little overwhelming, check out my What to Wear page [HERE] for some helpful ideas. The main thing? Avoid the overly matchy-matchy look (no all-white tops and jeans!) and, most importantly, wear something that feels comfortable and you. When you feel good, it shows in the photos!

Amy was so sweet and intuitive, it made the session such a wonderful experience and a real bonding time for our little family. The photos are magical and continue to bring us such joy- I get goosebumps every time I look at them!

"We are incredibly thankful to Amy for so beautifully capturing this precious time in our lives."

Josh & Jenna Densten

“Her images are raw, real and natural. I literally shed a tear looking through her photos! I look forward to having Amy capture our future family milestones as her pictures really do tell a thousand words!"

“Amy is truly talented and brings real emotion into every shot"

Angi Hill

I loved my pregnancy belly shoot. Amy made me feel beautiful, feminine and super comfortable. When our son Weston was born, Amy was there quietly capturing our birth story. When Weston was 6 weeks old, she was there again documenting life as a family of three. Lucky, we're with Amy!

"There is no one quite like Amy! "

Kind Words

You don't need to pretend infront of my camera. You are enough, just as you are.

You know that deep, overwhelming, gut-wrenching love you feel for your kids—the kind that sits in your bones and shapes your world? That’s what moves me. And believe it or not, one of my superpowers is capturing that love. Giving you a glimpse of just how deeply you love your kids (and how much they adore you) is what I do. It still amazes me that I get to freeze those feelings in time—it’s like creating magic.

A lot of photographers focus on making sure you fit into a certain aesthetic—coordinated outfits, perfectly curated poses, just right for their Instagram grid. That’s not my thing. Sure, I’ll give you styling and posing tips if you want them, but what I truly care about is capturing you. The real, raw, beautiful you. I want to create images that make your heart ache, sing, and smile all at once.

When we work together, you won’t feel like you’re playing a role or dressing up for a performance. You’ll walk away knowing the experience was authentic to you—your family, your love, your story.

And listen, I know family life is messy—mine is too! But that’s part of the magic. That chaos, that laughter, that fierce, unfiltered love—that’s what I want to document. One cup of tea at a time.

Where are you based & do you travel?

I live in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, Australia but travel far and wide to photograph my clients! I travel up to 40 KM from Melbourne CBD. If you are further than this there will be a small travel fee. If you don't want to pay a travel fee then you are welcome to choose a location a bit closer to my neck of the woods!

How does scheduling an Outdoor Session work?

It's quite simple, you can use THIS LINK to choose a date that you'd like your shoot to take place. Once you've indicated that, I'll email you back within 24 hours with your own client portal. Inside you'll be able to choose which Collection you'd like to book and there will also be a link to pay a $300 deposit to lock your date in. If you feel like you'd like a quick phone chat before you commit then that's no problem at all! Just email me and I'll call you!

What if the weather is bad on the day of our shoot?

Great question, we live in Melbourne after all!

I keep a close eye on the weather in the lead up to your shoot. If it looks like it's going to rain or blow your family away then I'll happily reschedule your shoot!

What happens during an Outdoor Session?

That's a good question! We basically hangout, play a few games with the kids. Sometimes I'll give you direction and a few silly prompts and sometimes I'll document you just as you are.

My heart desperately wants to capture your natural connection and make you cry happy tears when you see your images. If you see this time as just enjoying your family and not putting pressure on your kids to perform or smile at the camera then we will make a great team!

I'll always ask you if I need help with your kiddos but really, it works well when you leave kid management up to me. I hope that takes some pressure off you?!

Do I need to bring anything to my shoot?

If you happened to have a lovely neutral textured blanket then bring it along [I sometimes like to get you all lying or sitting down]. But if you don't have one then don't don't worry, we'll get amazing photos regardless!

Do you offer a client wardrobe?

I don't! And this is a very deliberate choice. Let me explain...

I really want to photograph your family in the most authentic way I can and I feel that if I had my clients all wearing the same dresses and outfits that I'd be trying to fit you into my mould, rather than capturing your authentic heartbeat as a family, just as you are! Which, is what lights my heart on fire the most, capturing families authentically and honestly.

When it comes to clothing and what to wear for your shoot, I want you to be comfortable and wear something that is 'you!'

You don't need to impress me, or dress how you think I might like. You, your clothing choice and your family are enough, just as you are. I've had Mother's wear shorts, jeans, skirts and dresses! Anything goes... except big logos and large stripes! lol

But if you really don't know what to wear and want some Inspo then you can CLICK HERE with a link to some ideas.

What can I do during the day to help me prepare for the shoot?

If your kids are still napping then giving them a nap later in the day can help as we are almost always out past their usual bedtime.

I know breaking routine for a night can feel a bit anxiety inducing (I'm int he thick of routine life atm!) but usually, when kids are outdoors and in an environment that's fun and new they do pretty well. They (and you) always have the next day to recover! And fun little snacks always help to keep them going...

I'm still breastfeeding, can I feed my baby during the session?

Absolutely YES, don't even ask! I can even take a few photos of you feeding if you'd like? Breastfeeding photos are always beautiful but I know it's not for everyone and I always ask before I start snapping.

What happens if we are sick?

That's totally OK, we can reschedule although, it might not always be possible to find a time in that ideal 2 week old window. And just know that if I am sick myself (even slightly) then we will reschedule too. I'd hate to transfer any germs to a precious new baby so there is grace both ways when it comes to sickness.

How long does it take to see my images?

I have a 14 day turn around time!

What if the kids are not cooperating?

I'm sure there will be a few moments of this! Kids, babies (even partners) usually feel the pressure of photoshoot day and the amount of times I hear "but he is usually so happy!"

Don't worry this happens ALL the time. Sometimes kids just need to stop, have a drink or snack and then they are good to go again. Just know... I am sensitive to your family and the little people break downs and if you guys need to stop then we do.

The worst thing you can do in this situation is get angry with your kids. It never works and it's hard to bring them back emotionally. Take the lead from me, I always have a few tricks up my sleeve!

Do you re-touch our images?

No, not really. I'm all about embracing and loving the real you! I definitely edit your images to suit my 'Amy Oliver Style' but I'm not a photographer who smooths skin or alters your body. If you are after this kind of thing then I might not be the right photographer for you.

Do you photograph same-sex families?

Of course! I'm sorry this has to even be a FAQ [but I have been asked]! Family is family and now let's just pretend this isn't a question, OK?!
