Hi, I'm Amy! Melbourne based, Australian Mama of three, family & newborn photographer [+ light chaser]!
Is Your Newborn Photographer Putting Safety First? Here’s What to Ask Before You Book
When you’ve just had a baby, your brain is somewhere between “must take all the photos!” and “must protect this tiny human at all costs!” — which, honestly, is exactly how it should be.
As a mum myself (and a newborn photographer who’s been doing this for years), I want you to know this: your baby’s safety always comes before the shot. Always.
Why Newborn Photography Safety Matters
Those squishy, curled-up newborn photos look dreamy, don’t they? But did you know that some of the more elaborate poses you see online — like babies holding up their own heads or balancing in buckets — aren’t actually real? Well, not in the way they appear.
In reality, those shots often take multiple images, clever hand placement, and some Photoshop magic to make sure baby is never unsupported. If they’re done by an experienced photographer? All good. If they’re not? It can be risky — and no photo is worth that.
Some Popular Poses That Can Be Risky
Let’s break the ‘Pinterest illusions’:
The Froggy Pose: You know the one — baby’s chin propped up on tiny hands. This pose is always a composite, with hands supporting baby at all times.
Hanging or Suspended Shots: Babies in slings, hammocks, or baskets dangling in mid-air? These must be done with spotters and edited later.
Props and Buckets: Babies balanced in glass bowls, baskets, or buckets need extra care, weights, and padding. Done wrong, they can tip or put pressure on tiny airways.
Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer
Here’s a little checklist for peace of mind:
Are they trained in newborn safety and posing?
Do they wear a camera strap around their neck at all times?
Do they use spotters or composite images for tricky poses?
What are their strategies from protecting the baby from their siblings when trying to get the sibling photo?
Will your baby ever be left unsupported, even for a second? (Hint: the answer should be no.)
How do they handle a baby who doesn’t settle easily? (Good answer: they adapt, cuddle, and never force a pose.)
Why I Keep It Simple — And Safe
Here’s where I let you exhale: in my in-home newborn sessions, there’s zero risk of awkward poses or precarious props. I’m all about baby-led, natural relaxed moments in your own space — where you and your baby feel calm, comfy, and safe.
No elaborate posing.
No cold props.
No worrying about your tiny human toppling off something.
Just sweet snuggles, sleepy stretches, feeding breaks, and all the love that makes your family yours.
Your Baby’s Safety Comes First — Always!
My hope is that you feel confident asking any photographer about safety — because you deserve to know. And if you choose me, I want you to know you’re in gentle, experienced hands that will never put a pretty picture above your baby’s wellbeing.
The beautiful thing about the style of newborn photography I create is that your baby rarely leaves your arms — and the moments we capture are simple, natural, and timeless. There’s no need for hours of careful posing or folding your baby into tricky positions that don’t feel quite natural. Honestly, I don’t know many brand new mums who’d choose to spend hours in a hot studio helping to balance their baby in a pose — when instead, you could be snuggled up on the couch, soaking in all that newborn goodness, just as you are. It’s more relaxed for you, and more comfortable for your baby — a win for everyone.
If you’d love timeless, honest photos that celebrate your newborn exactly as they are — safe, loved, and snuggly at home — I’d love to plan your session together.
